Domaine Courbis Cornas Champelrose 2005 is a superlative wine from a stellar vintage: it is made from some of the appellation's finest Syrah, aged in oak barrels for 18 months. The result is a robust yet silky plum scented wine with complex hints of spice and tanned leather; supple enough to be drunk relatively young, but with great ageing potential
When we visited Domaine Courbis this spring, we were bowled over by the quality of the estate's wines (and by the charming hospitality of Laurent Courbis!). Laurent took us on a tour of his vineyards, most of which are planted on the sheer south and west facing slopes of Saint Joseph. The estate also owns 8 hectares of hillside vineyard in Cornas, from which it makes its most concentrated, dark, brooding wines.
Domaine Courbis dates from the 16th century and has been handed down from father to son since the start of the 20th century. The vineyards currently extend to 32 hectares of terrassed vineyard, situated around the villages of Glun, Châteaubourg and Cornas.
