Cazal Viel Viognier Grande Reserve 2009 Pays d'Oc is consistently one of the finest Viogniers from anywhere in the Languedoc. Critic Jamie Goode, for example, writes "(This) Viognier is probably the best I've yet had from the Languedoc". Rich, exotic and full-bodied, 30% of the wine is aged in French oak, to add toasty complexity to a wonderfully fresh wine.

Key facts

The Miquel family have been making wines in Saint-Chinian, in the Languedoc, since the French Revolution. The estate specialises in Viognier (of which it owns 20 hectares of vines) and Syrah (60 hectares). The estate's mission is to make "the ultimate Saint-Chinian", but its wines from the Pays d'Oc are some of the most affordable, classy offerings from this exciting, often under-valued, region.
