Pouilly-Fumé Le Champ des Vignes 2008 from Domaine Tabordet has an intense, modern style of Loire white, with a ripe, grassy yet creamy nose. The palate is rich, almost exotic, with flavours of ripe grapefruit and gooseberries and a long finish.
Brothers Yvon and Pascal Tabordet took over their 2.5 hectares of family vineyards in 1981, in the Verdigny district 3 kms from Sancerre. In 1988 they bought 8 further hectares of vines in neighbouring Pouilly-Fumé, on prime flinty slopes, making this the larger part of the estate.
Yvon married primary school teacher Anne-Marie, and Pascal (by a stroke of efficient good fortune) married Anne-Marie's sister Marie-Laure, who now works full time on the vineyards. The estate is very much a family business, run in a traditional spirit, but with the latest winemaking technology.
Serve with: Grilled fish, shellfish and goat's cheese.
