Villa Gutenberg Riesling Kabinett Johannisberger Erntebringer 2010, from Germany's Rheingau region, is the best Qualitatswein for under £10 that we have tasted. It is a medium-dry delicate Riesling with vibrant aromas of steely lime, flowers and a hint of peach.
The Rheingau exhibits the most classic Riesling flavours anywhere in the Rhine, as this is where the Rhine flows directly east to west at the foot of the Rheingau's south-facing slopes.
The Kabinett quality level is the first rung on the Qualitätswein mit Prädikat qaulity scale, which ensures a certain level of ripeness - and natural grape sugar - at harvest time.
Set back from the River Rhine, the Grosslage (or group of vineyards) called Erntebringer is probably the best known of the Rheingau. The village of Johannisberg is home to the Famous Schloss Johannisberg, often known as the "Cathedral of Riesling", with its magnificent cellars.
