Carmen Reserva Gewurztraminer 2009 - We were understandably sceptical before we tasted this wine. The Gewurztraminer grape is rarely capable of the perfumed intensity it gives the wines in its native Alsace, but this Chilean example is delicate, floral and grapey: in many ways reminiscent of a subtle dry Muscat. A great treat for the adventurous!
Vina Carmen was founded in 1850 by Christian Lanz, who named the winery in honour of his beloved wife Carmen. In 1992 a new winery was built and new vineyards were planted, to produce the best quality wines from Chile.
Carmen has been recognized for its quality and for being a pioneer in the Chilean wine industry. Indeed, Chile's signature Carmenère grape was discovered amongst Carmen vineyards in Alto Maipo after having been lost for many years in it native France. Carmen Gold, the company´s icon wine, was one of Chile´s first internationally recognized ultra premium wines.
