Frascati Superiore 2011 Poggio Le Volpi is a ripe, tropical flavoured Italian white with subtle white pepper undertones. Frascati Superiore is a small, superior sub-zone withing the wider Frascati grape growing area. Grapes are the local Malvasia Bianca di Candida (70%) and Malvasia del Lazio (10%) and Bombino Bianco (10%), blended with 10% Sauvignon Blanc.
Still little known in the UK, the Poggio Le Volpi estate has developed a cult following in Europe. It covers 15 hectares of vineyards situated on the lower slopes of Monte Porzio Catone in the heart of the Frascati Superiore appellation. The vines are mainly south facing and are trained low. Yields are kept low. The winery dates back more than 100 years, but today is equipped with the most modern winemaking technology.
The estate's vineyards are tended with passion and skill by owner and winemaker Felice Merge. Italy's most famous winemaker, Riccardo Cotarella, is consultant oenologist.
